What is STEAM Education?

STEAM is an attempt to add a focus on the Arts and design to the traditional model of STEM education championed by Maeda and RISD.  According to RISD’s site, the arts teach ” flexible thinking, risk-taking and creative problem solving,” and in one of Maeda’s articles about the topic, claims that the arts provide insight into a “human experience” which shapes design.

Maeda and others in support of the idea highlight Apple’s i-technology design as an example of the need for art in the STEM model–in his article, Maeda states that the iPod was simply another MP3 player that was made important through arts and design.
